I remember the red line painted on the ground between the cement barracks which we were ordered not to cross due to the spinal meningitis outbreak at the fort. Went on to Aberdeen Proving Grounds for AIT and then off to Tuy Hoa Vietnam. BCT unit was C-3-1.

Had a gap in my Oregon Nation Guard duty and had to do basic training to rejoin. Did basic train in Light Infantry with a tour in Advanced Infantry Training. Would take a military buss over to the Beer Gardens and get drunk on their 3.5 beer. Celebrated my twenty birthday doing push-ups. Now I\'m 77 and recalling wonderful times

Ours was one of the last BCT companies to go through Fort Ord. When we finished we packed up the gear and turned the lights off. I went from there just down the road to the Presidio of Monterey so I spent almost a year in the area. I had a great time in basic as a squad leader and an even better time at DLI since I already knew German so I did not have to study much at all. I majored in beer drinking at the club. I\'d like to hear from any of the guys from my platoon or squad. I\'m still in touch with one or two of them but can\'t even remember most of their names now.

Received Basic training for 8 weeks in the cement barracks. Graduated and then returned to Fort Ord for second 8 weeks of Admin School in the old wooden barracks. Qualified for additional 8 weeks for G-3 training. Upon completion, was stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco/ Fort Baker across the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito, CA. Placed at HQ 6th Region Air Defense Command. Went on to be Training Sgt. at Reserve unit in WA and was honorably discharged in 1967 as Sgt. E-6. Great memories of Fort Ord and basic training and time at the Presidio/Ft. Baker...
Looking for the Fort Ord yearbook from Jan 9 - Mar 9, 1961 for Company C 2 1. Would be happy to purchase a book if one is found.

Parent of student at CSUMB 2014

Hi Ron,
My son began attending CSUMB in August, initially during some down time on parent’s weekend I took some time to explore the “cement” barracks area south of the campus. I became intrigued by the amount of soldier art that I discovered in the buildings and began making it a regular part of my campus visits to knock around the base to explore to search for artwork.
In the passing weeks I calculated that I have spent approximately 30 hours alone just searching the dark caverns of the cement barracks for artwork, going from top to bottom in all of the buildings that are still accessible.
This past weekend I began exploring the wooden barracks just east of Dunes state park, uncovering buildings completely overgrown with trees, and stumbling upon piles of things like ammunition, locks, buttons, and belt buckles.
I would love to speak with you regarding things that I have seen, many of the things you have photographed I have stumbled upon, and in some instances you have helped fill in blanks to places that are no longer just by seeing your pictures of the area.
Thanks for your site, I enjoy reading what you have posted, and I would love for you to see some of the pictures I have taken.
