I skated in the North Central Region and had friends especially in Iowa, MN and Nebraska. I won Novice Men\'s Singles in 1966 at Regionals. If anyone out there remembers and some other Minnesota skaters give me a shout. It would be great to find some programs from some Regional and Tri State meets from the 1960\'s.

I first put a pair of rental roller skates on at Tiny's Roller Skating Rink in 1960. Tiny's was located on Jefferson Hwy; Jefferson, LA. I then skated at Skateland, 1019 Charbonnet St, New Orleans, LA. In the 1950's Skateland was called Koppleman's and was owned/run by Mom & Pop Koppleman. The concession stand was run by Miss Mary who was from Germany. The Pro's were originally Rod Hacket, followed by Bill Sophore, then Jack Barbre. With Jack Barbre, I skated with Arlene Reuther, who subsequently became my wife, and in 1980 we won 1st place Classic Dance at South Central Regional’s in Fort Worth, Texas. I haven't skated in many years, but about three weeks ago put my old Douglas Snyder's on and gave it a try. To my amazement, I can still stand up and remember most of the old RSROA dances from 1st Bar to Gold. So now, I go on slow nights to the local roller skating rink in Slidell, LA. Unfortunately, they don't play the beautiful organ music through their speakers, but rather hip hop/rap; but that's OK for ear plugs work just fine. So for this 65 year old it's all about keeping in shape and trying to convince the rink owner to have an old timer’s night for folder skaters like myself. Thank you for the web site I truly enjoyed navigating through it especially the old photos. Can you get some old organ music to give the full effect? Respectfully, Tom Holley

The reason for the decline in competitive skating in the US is due to National Board and the few that hold on to old ways and want to drain the sport dry. Not until the entire Board is swept clean and new faces are placed into key positions and there are no strings to the outcast will skating ever be what it was in the 1970's & 1980 and early 1990's. Skaters and parents and coaches should demand the outsting of the Board and set it up that skaters have a vote of who represents them in Lincoln, NE.

The reasons for the decline in skating is the rsroa. They need younger people to step up to the plate. Not just rink owners but skaters need to be in charge of the sport

I used to be in the club at Tradewinds RR and Carousel RR in Houston TX with Pro Pam Cornwall, and champions April Allen, Abe Blass, Royce Miller and Debbie Isenhour. I was a "nobody" as far as skills went, and certainly not in their competitive league, but remember the pleasure of watching them skate! Thanks for the wonderful memories!

With great sadness I report the passing of Mary Gaudy, mother of Joe Gaudy (National Senior Dance Champion in 1972 and 1973, mother-in-law of Marie Gaudy (nee Spoleti, Joe's Senior Dance Partner in 1972-73), and grandmother to Joe and Marie's daughter, Jessica, World Class Senior and Free Dance.

In the 1950's and early 1960's, Mary was the rink organist at the Fordham Skating Palace in the Bronx, NY. When Fordham closed in the early 1960's, the Dance and Figure Club members moved to the Park Circle Roller Rink, Brooklyn NY, and Mary became the rink organist there.

Mary was a great lady, accomplished musician, surrogate Mom to all of us who skated at Fordham and Park Circle, and a true friend of skating and skaters everywhere. The angels in heaven are dancing to a new organist, and we will miss Mary with all our hearts.
