You are not responsible for him, he is an adult, not your child. If he is not willing to make an effort to change things then don't expect things to get better.
Life is too short to stay where you are not happy!
Better to end it sooner rather than later- it's not going to magically get better. I stayed too long, expected things to somehow get better, even though he would not make an effort to improve the situation. Everything was "my fault."
