The legal process of divorce is the scariest part

Has anyone had a “good” experience with their NYC divorce attorney? When you see how many disciplinary complaints are filed against attorneys in NYC, and having had some very negative attorney experiences myself, I fear hiring an attorney more than getting divorced. I have heard nightmares of the process being purposely prolonged for attorney billing sake and attorneys taking a big chunk of people asserts once they know what the couple has. A divorce attorney needs to follow the highest ethical standards.
Does anyone have any real recommendations that aren’t self promotion by an attorney?

Don’t tell them what your true cash savings are! The first lawyer I saw, ‘mysteriously’ gave a quote that would have taken every cent I had!

If you don’t tell them what you have then how can it be divided in the divorce? My husband is hiding assets I have to go after.
Finding a lawyer to trust is the most difficult, and seemingly impossible, part of all this.

I agree that hiring an attorney can make divorce even scarier. My husband and I were told by separate divorce attorneys we consulted with it would be $300k-$500k each because we have a complicated divorce with lots of assets and a disputed non-legal post nuptial agreement. If there’s any way you can do divorce mediation or collaborative divorce that’s the way to go. We’re still trying to agree on our own marital settlement agreement after 8 months separated (15 years married 2nd marriages 24 years together) and it’s a battle that I’m not sure what to do at this point. I’ve heard from others their divorce was so costly that it made their divorce even uglier and harder both emotionally and financially. I’m still wondering how to get to a marital settlement agreement without costly attorneys.
