This is probably a dumb question but here it goes. I just installed a marine radio in my boat so I can talk to all you pro fishermen on Winni. After I installed it, I decided to see if it would work with my handheld 2 way walkabout and I couldn't get anything to send or receive through the marine radio via the walkabout. I then did an auto scan and did pick up a coastguard broadcast on channel 16. This was all done from my garage in Goffstown NH. Here's the question....do marine radios broadcast on different frequencies than regular walkabouts and therefore I can only pick up other boaters with marine radios or did i screw up the installation with the antenna and therefore am not receiving all 2-way communication from land or water?
Thanks for any help....I hope it's just marine radios can communicate only with marine radios for an answer.
VHF marine radios have their own band of frequencies which are different than your so called walk-a-round frequencies, family radios.

Yes, I've been looking at Standard Horizon handhelds this week and on one of the sites I was browsing there was bold letters saying for use on water only, use on land was punishable by $10,000 fine for first offense. I guess it can cause interference with others using that band on land.
A long time ago all VHF marine radios were required to be license by FCC for about 1 hundred buck for 5 years. The FCC has since allowed VHF marine radios to be used on water with out a license for safety reason. All base stations (land) are required to be license.
