Re: Advice Please

HI, Lol Dave
thnak you for writing back so quickly, but you didnt really answer any of my questions. I live in CT so I would like to go to the cabelas before I head up to the lake. Could you please tell me some lures they are hittting on? Also I heard that streamers work, what size and color? What pound test should I put on my rods? I would love to take a trip out on the cool water charter, but I just baught a boat so I am tight with cash right now.
Thanks

Re: Advice Please

Some good lures are the DB smelts/ Guide specials/ and top guns, streamers also work but I'm more of a lure guy using the above named lures, in many colors, one of my best is orange/blk dots/copper back, the rangley which is a pink/silver/black and copper back. I've also had good luck on the wonderbread top gun/guide special which is white/with a bunch of different colored spots on it and copper back. Not much I can tell you about flies, except for AJ's bait and tackle white perch fly which I've had luck on and the red grey ghost. For my poles I used 10 pound test as my main line (yo-zuri hybrid) which I find is very strong and lasts most of the season for me, with about an 8 foot leader of 6 pound (yo-zuri hybrid). I've had extremely good luck with this on all my set-ups so I've stuck with it. Some areas on the lake I've had decent success is over by rattlesnake island, and 5 and 6 mile islands, I also like the bay inside of Bear Island when the wind gets crazy. I am by no means an expert on Winni LOL Now some of the maine lakes I could be of better assistance LMAO but I just started catching fish on winni myself within the last 2-3 years LOL. At the time your coming up I would be looking for the bait pods on my fish finder and fish accordingly with my riggers, would also start out with 3-4 colors on leadcore in the a.m. early and then go to 5-7 colors or more. Biggest thing to remember is don't get frustrated, it's def. a learning curve for any person just getting into salmon fishing. Most importantly have fun and enjoy yourself on the water. Take Care God Bless LOL Dave

Re: Advice Please

Don"t believe you will find any lures. At cabelas that will work. Possible will have some streamer flys that will work. Get the single hook ones about 2 inches long. Red grey ghost, Mainard marvel, And fire smelt. Flys are best fished with some chop on the water, Unless you have planer boards. But your best bet would be to call or E - mail Aj Bait and tackle. Check the links on the home page. He"s the best one to set you up.Then just follow the Board there sould be fishing reports Telling whats working best. Also go back into the past reports. Believe you can go back to last year.Any problems just ask on here im sure some one wiil help out. Also can check out the Kittery Trading Post fishing report. Aj usually puts a report in it about Winni.Every week.

Re: Advice Please

Cody, as much as I love Cabelas skip that trip save your money and "GO TO AJ"S" more bang for your buck and you'll get local tackle and advice on how and where to use it.Cabelas don't know jack about winni salmon bows or laker ect.Good luck i'll be on the lake next week if your around give a shout on ch12.

Re: Advice Please

Cody,

My name is also Cody and I started fishing Lake Winni at the age of 15. This is a great way to gain knowledge about this style of fishing particularly on this body of water. The people on this board and a lot of hours spent on lake winni has helped me come a long way.

To start though; 8-10 lb test mono with 6-9' of 4-6 lb floro leaders. Fish 2.2 - 2.4 mph (measured on GPS if you have one)

Stop in and see Alan at AJ's he is always happy to share a couple tips.

Give me a call whenever you want and I would be happy to give you whatever advice you would like!

Re: Advice Please

I'm only in my 2nd season of trolling but I can offer a few tips I wish I knew when I first started. Like several previous replies you should go to AJ's and he will give great advice and has the equipment you need. Buy a rubber net to avoid injuring the salmon (nylon nets scrape off their scales) and other fish during capture. Get some flashers, which are set of spinning blades attached to the downrigger ball, to attract fish to your lure(AJ has them). The book Angling In The Smile of the Great Spirit by Harold C. Lyon has a lot of info on lures, depths, species, and methods for Winnipesaukee from many local master fishermen (including AJ), cost $25. You can find most of the info in the book free on this site if you do specific searches in the posts but you'll have to sort through some irrelevant stuff. If you have Cannon or similar pinch pad releases replace them with Roemer or Chamberlain releases, I wasted 3 weeks and almost went nuts trying to get pressure right on the pinch pads. The Roemers and Chamberlain are easier, more accurate, and repeatable for adjusting release pressure. Best of Luck.

Re: Advice Please

Another good release are the blacks, very easy to use, twist line 3-5 times put in, close and away you go. I love em!!!!!!!!!! Take Care God Bless LOL Dave

Re: Advice Please

Great advice give here. One of the comments triggered a question in me as well. How far should your lures ride behind the streamers? I normally put the lures farther away from the weight but I'm not sure how to handle the streamers.

Re: Advice Please

Reminds me of myself only a few years ago...where do you fish out of? I am 19 years old and started asking questions on the site just like you so I'd be more than willing to bring you out if I am around when you are up.
