does this happen to anyone ?

fished newfound monday morn 440 to 1100 3 times when I popped the line out of the release to check or change lure as i was reeling in a fish slammed the lure had each for a few seconds then lost them kinda took me by surprise.has happened a couple times this year never 3 times in one day.I will be ready for the next one.does anyone catch many fish like this?

Re: does this happen to anyone ?

Funny you mention this... I have never had that happen before today. But today ON NEWFOUND I had a very similar occurence happen twice. Once I went back to drop a rigger down about 20', but I only went about ten feet and "pop" there goes the line. First thought was I had too much tension and I caused a release, but in a heartbeat it was clear a laker had just hit the lure.
Maybe an hour later, I go to pull up a line from 90' to the "hot zone" of 60'... I get about half way up there and "pop" there goes the line again. Once again its a fish, though we didn't land this one so no idea what it was.
I was using roemer releases set pretty light so I really don't think I was pulling them around and then "triggering the release" when I adjusted heights. Put it this way... a little 8" salmon triggered one of those releases prior to that happening.

Maybe all these fish we were "marking" on the ff weren't too hungry, but when they thought that little lure was getting away from them they hit out of instinct? Makes sense... just haven't had it happen before so seemed weird that you mentioned these odd bites happened to you on Newfound as well.
Maybe a new technigue to try...?

I did notice I had to go faster on Newfound to trigger strikes? I was running 2.1-2.3 at first, but found that 2.5/2.6 was better. Anyone else seen this difference up there?

Re: Re: does this happen to anyone ?

If i drag my butt up there in a few hrs ill be checking my lure every 15 minutes or so instead of every hour. hearing your story theres gotta be something to this . speed wise I was reeling pretty fast when i got the strikes I might try speeding up to 4-5 mph for a few seconds try to trigger some strikes that way.

Re: Re: Re: does this happen to anyone ?

yes i catch alot of fish that way. fish will swim right behind the ball waiting to strike. i have 2 cannon elec. when i mark fish swimming between my balls or alot of arches i will hit the up botton or quickly let it down some of the times getting a fish somtimes if i find a school of fish i will release the rod on purpose and just let the boat pull the slack out (no reeling) getting fish that way also. did the same thing in winni on sunday the only salmon (21.5") i got was when bringing the ball up to a school of fish also got 3 lakers.

Re: Re: Re: Re: does this happen to anyone ?

I to have had this happen many times. I believe the abrupt change in swimming motion causes the following salmon to finally get aggressive.

Re: does this happen to anyone ?

i think as soon as the salmon sees something different happen it reacts on instinct. sometimes no hits while trolling around in deep water, then when the ball hits a ledge bango fish on. been seeing a few fish follow the ball all the way to the surface lately so i know they are following the attractors for a long time

Re: Re: does this happen to anyone ?

Its the speed and what the lure is doing at that speed. Like I said, I hit them at 2.5-2.8...They do different things at higher speed. We all troll basicly the same thing, at the same speed. After awhile, they get use to that. Now here comes something faster, and it is moving all over the place. Chomp!!
I find if I keep my speed up, and even at 3.0 this time of year, the sleepers will hit. When ever I release my line from my rigger clip, I go fast and slow down, and like you, get strikes while bringing the line in.The speed also gets my flashers moving more. My poles look like they are in Jaysons Jigging box!!
That with dozens of crazy Ivans....And the "golden horshoe"......
