Of Mice, Salmon & whitefish?

My girlfriend said "Honey, don't you always say we should run the old gas out of the boat tank before you store her for the winter? And you know, we really NEED one last trip up to the lake." (Boys, you gotta love a woman like that!) So, "the Tank" had her last voyage on Winnie for this year.
Whitefish: I caught what I believe are whitefish (a first for me) 3 ranging in size from 8-16 inches off Welch's Isl. yesterday afternoon. Anybody else getting them?? Silver sides, froked tails w/ very large scales.
Salmon: 1) 20" salmon (5 PM), donkeyed 2 others by boat & 2 more LDR's. Gorgeous sunset.
This AM 1) 22" Salmon,(3lbs, 6 oz) (8:30 AM)donkeyed another by boat and 2 LDR's. All on Al Nute's Yellow manards marvel flies (single hook), 5-7 colors out, speed 1.8 to 2.2. Beautiful sunrise w/ fog lifting from water.
& Mice: 3 mice, 2 Confirmed kills & 1 who chose to jump overboard rather than face an enraged skipper w/ fish wacker. Said mouse was last seen swimming between the Broads & Rattlesnake Isl.
(Hey, they ate two holes in my canvas awning. No more "Mr. Nice Guy"....Death to All Rodents!

All the best,

Gary

Re: Of Mice, Salmon & whitefish?

Tank - that sounds like a Whitefish, though I've only seen pictures. Hopefully one of the pros will confirm for you.

I agree with "death to all rodents." My rage against rodents started with garden damage. One year I planted beans not once, not twice, but three times (for nothing) due to a woodchuck invasion. I finally buried a fence. Only after a few years some of the smarter rodents are sneaking in...I bought an air rifle (legal near houses!) and became dead-eye dick with it. I have a serious rodent policy -- the price of a woodchuck trespassing is death. For other rodents, if they stick a paw, whisker or other body part inside my garden...death. You were kind to give the mouse a shot at survival. If that mouse made it ashore from the Broads, then thats what "natural selection" is all about according to Darwin...

Re: Of Mice, Salmon & whitefish?

They could be whitefish. You are sure they are not white perch? Whitefish or shad as we used to call them do have large scales and silver sides but they also have very small mouths for there size. back in the the late fities and early 60s when my Dad {salmoneer} was building our camp on cow island we caught a lot of shad in the bay between Little Bear and Cow island. I haven't caught a shad in Winni since the 70s. I will be interested to read what others think also on this.

It could have been what they call a "roach" which i think is just a big bait fish...just an idea.

Sounds like roach or fall fish as they're called.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Of Mice, Salmon & whitefish?

Maybe they weren't whitefish...Their mouths didn't seem all that small to me. They took a fly with a #4 hook readily enough. I caught them 6 colors out in 80 feet of water. Isn't that kinda deep and far from structure for perch??? If they were white perch, they sure were good sized!!! (I know yellow perch well enough, bait theives!)
I've never seen a "fallfish." Is there somewhere I could see a photo?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Of Mice, Salmon & whitefish?

This is a white perch... been catching one or two each trip lately... even out on the broads in over 100' of water.

This is a Whitefish

They are extinct in most of their natural range and exist a bit in northern Maine now. Lots of places with them in the upper midwest also.

This one is a Lake Whitefish it's cousin the Round Whitefish looks similar but more of a round shape like a tube rather than the Lake Whitefish's salmon shape.

Re: This is a Whitefish

Yo Ad - I could not view the Whitefish pic. BTW - I'd like to post a couple pics with a report on Moosehead if you could advise how to do so on the board...

Re: Re: This is a Whitefish

Adrien... I take it your brother catches those at his camp? Are they good eating or a "junk" fish?

Re: Re: This is a Whitefish

it takes some time to do, i will help you with it on saturday.

i am going to bed now i have a double of charters tomorrow. From dawn to dark i am going to be pooped.

try the pic again it should work, if you only get the x box, right click it and select show picture.

Re: Re: Re: This is a Whitefish

they are not trash, i love them. he catches them a lot his lake has probably the best population of them anywhere. in new England. they fight like a bull and will take dry flies in the evening and spoons trolled on bottom in the day ice fishing they are the best fighters on a light jig stick.

Re: Re: Re: This is a Whitefish

Thanks Yo. If its easier for me to e-mail the pics (3-4?) and for you to explain later thats fine.

...My wife only sorta understands the concept of being REALLY tired after getting up at 3:30 am to "fish." Two charters must be killer salmon fishing. I hope the weather is good for you..

Re: Re: Re: Re: This is a Whitefish

Eric... if my post above makes no sense to you... send me the pics and I'll post them tonight. We'll let Adrien get some shuteye... he has to be up in about 5 hours to make it to winni on time.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: This is a Whitefish

Slp / craig - thanks for the offer. I'll try and work through your instructions and see if I can make it work first. I'm losing steam too so I'll get some sleep and work on this tomorrow. I've got to get my notebook out of the boat now before bed...its finally not raining.

Re: This is a Whitefish

i had never seen one til i went fishing out in montana, they are a blast on a fly rod. some consider them a junk fish out there, but for catch and release they can be great.

Re: Of Mice, Salmon & whitefish?

Your fish sounds like a fallfish. Are really a big chub and fairly common in many NH lakes. Give a good fight on light tackle.

Re: Re: Of Mice, Salmon & whitefish?

In Northern Maine, deep in the Allagash :)we ground up the meat, mixed it with mayo, and ate it like tuna. I beleive they still sell it in the grocery stores mixed up that way. Great eating , could never catch any myself though....
