I've seen people with the Dave Davies on a lead core rig, but WOW, they must be heavy to bring in, between the fish, 6 to 8 colors lead core and the blades, must be like brining in an old tire.

Most guys that use them and/or other flashers, verticle or horizontal, put them off the ball or above the ball in the case of verticle blades.

I buy snaps to attach them to the ball, some people use shower curtain clips, but they come apart too easy if you snag bottom.

Dave davis rigs is a series of willow blades on a cable with a keel in the front then you attach a leader behind them and put ether a lure or live bait they call them cow bells also.You can run them on lead core or your riggers. They thump when you are going the right speed.Hope this helps.

John I have never heard of using davis rigs like that,is that something that you use alot when fishing salmon?In my years of fishing up in Maine they have been using davis rigs and lead core for a long time I call them meat fisherman because I think all they care about is catching a fish to bring home for supper.I can't see how you could even feel a fish on that type of set up but they do use them still.

I've tried using bigger attractors like the classic Dave Davis and Cowbell varieties in-line on leadcore and found them to be a paint on leadcore as John S. suggests. I've gone to using the vertical attractors on the ball (in line between the ball and rigger cable with a 12" rubber snubber just above the flashers). On my leadcore and sometime on the rigger set ups as well I use very small dakota blade attractors. Typically only two blades with some beads. A lot less drag and easier to use with lighter test than the full sized Dave Davis spinners, cowbell's etc. Some guys are using both the horizontals and verticals, though I'd be concerned about using the verticals and D. Davis type at the same time. Instead, I'm using a Popeye technique -- attached big 11-in. "slasher" type flashers to the back of the ball; less likely to tangle with the veticals.

Ok Eric I have to ask.In my 30 years of fishing New England I have never heard of using Davis rigs like you are saying.Never saw a vertical attractor used ether.Am I missing something?I can understand the Davis rig on the ball but what does a vertical Davis rig look like?Doesn't that have a big effect on the blow back on the rigger?Sorry for all the questions but you got me curios.Is this something that alot of people on this site use?Thanks in advance.

I am not using the Dave Davis' as verticals or horizontals off the ball. I am using specially made vertical attractor's I bought from Alan Nute at A.J.s bait and tackle on advice of Salty. Salty and several other good fisherman are using them and swear by the them. They are essentially three large willow blades on wire leads attached to what is essentially a length of downrigger cable. My variation is that I use a 12-in. rubber snubber as well. My set up is as follows: rigger cable to snubber to verticals to the ball. I attach my release right where the snubber attaches to the rigger cable (and just below the "stop" insulator clip for my Canon Mag 10s which stops the retrieve automatically). This way the whole flashing and jangling assembly stays below the water line when I'm setting the releases etc. I am also toying with the use of very large 11-in. "salmon slasher" type flashers off the back of the ball. This is an idea of Popeye's and it imparts a jigging machine like motion on smaller 6 - 8 # weights. This has all worked well for me and I did not have any tangles, perhaps because I did NOT use the dave davis off the back of the ball which might tangle with the verticals (a concern raised by Salty). I am not experienced enough to know how this compares (fishing results wise), but other more experienced and successful fisherman swear by the verticals, so I'm sticking with them.

Alan Nute sells the verticals - they are like $20 each and come as either reflective silver/copper or silver/blue. I have both.

The verticals and horizontals are manufactured by Moosalamoo Shoe Horn Co. I’ve been using them for some 12+ yrs., was first introduced to them when fishing Lake Champlain and they are effective. Stacking one or two lures over them 3’ to 10’ back, 3’ to 5’ is the most effective at times.

No sweat Erin, I was annoyed with losing my post (twice) on the board...UGHH...not your question...I did not give up because I wanted to make sure I gave you the exact info. Grey Ghost's pic is worth a thousand words. Good photographer. I do recommend the snubber though, I think its maybe the key to my not getting tangles and it makes it easier to handle the rigger weights etc. They are sold by Cabela's, under rigger accessories I think.

No problem Eric I just didn't want to start off being new to a site and have someone P***ed off right off that bat that's not good in my books.But thanks for the reply.That set up is new to me so the picture was worth a thousand words from Gray Ghost.I will be checking out that set up this winter.Thanks again.

When I said "I use them too" I was referring to the snubbers that is, not the verticles. Allot better grabbing onto a snubber than the cable with a 10 pound ball attached. Plus I think they help when you hit the bottom as I do quite often in Squam. But some people will tell you not to use them, don't know why ????

Be a great Holiday weekend to fish, guess I'll go up and do a little Bass fishin, caught plenty by accident when trolling for Salmon all season. Maybe I'll catch my 7 pound Salmon by accident while casting for Smallies, LOL ??????

I fished with Popeye and his 11" flasher worked super, he fished two lines that way and I fished 2 lead core, the flasher set up out fished the lead core and that was the time of year when lead core was "hot". We both fished fly's, his caught fish 2 or 3 to 1 more than my led core set up.

Actually Popeye had told me about this set up back at the gathering last spring, so I bought a few and had them in the boat, never used them of course. So when back on my own Lake after seeing them in action, I tried my version of the 11" flasher set up.

Here's what I did:
First I took off my Dave Davis blades, I attached the 11" flasher off the back of my 10 pound pancake ball, I know your supposed to use smaller balls, which I had but too lazy to change em. Then I attached a release directly off the flasher (not the cable as Popeye did) and attached my line with the spoon about 30' back. That rod was all bouncing over the place like crazy and I did catch a Salmon when all my regular stuff failed the same day.

Not sure what a slasher is, I got lost in that part of the post, but the flasher sure worked well..

This is why this message board is so dangerous to the Salmon, what you read here, most times works..

does a flasher spin, sway back and forth like a dodger, or both. been thinking of makeing some this winter for next year. think ill call mine fish swayers (swears), with the season closed, i need some projects til the pond freezes in.

They are big, 11-in. long fish shaped flashers with a big curl / kick in the "tail." They sure do flash and move like a big dodger.

Oh now I see, I know a guy that uses them as a flasher, he ties fly's or spoons behind them like a regular Flasher. My regular flashers that I use all the time are only about 4" long, work great with fly's, never tried the bigger ones that way, thought they were for Ontario, etc. only.

They sure would make the ball move and give your spoon/fly some real action used that way, I suppose they would be the same as the reguar 11" flasher that Popeye used when I was with him.

John for your info.These types of flashers are used at lake ontario also.But I only use them in the fall with cut bait.They do put quite a pull on your riggers and rods.We use the flasher then attached to it I use what they call a twinkie rig which has 3 fly's in series then a cut bait rig.They spin and sway back and forth depending on your speed.I caught my biggest king off it this year.

I tried a cut bait rig once a huy sent me, but couldn't find the right bait (frozen herring) used shiners, never did get the right action on it.

Go to Cabelas web site and go to fishing, then trolling, then dodgers, flashers, etc. and find Dave Davis Lake Trolls, click on it and find Dave Davis Lake Trolls. Get the 48" set up and attach to back of rigger ball, it attracts the fish, supposed to be like a school of bait or something. Attach your bait above and behind the blades, supposed to look like a trailing smelt, etc. I think they work good when fishing at 30 feet or more.

AJ sells them, not sure about Paugus, or get em from Cabellas. Buy a few different colors, but I don't think it matters much, I use Gold and Bronze or Copper.

I see alot of copper and florescent red.Did you make that spoon box or did you buy it some where?That's a good idea to keep them from getting all banged up.That looks like it took you a long time to put together that many spoons.Where do you buy your suttons spoons from All mine are so old and scracthed up.I haven't seen them any where down where I live that sells them.Thanks for the picture.

used the 61 suttons copper and nickle earlier in the year along w/ the 61 guns (painted suttons). have not used them much since early july. some of the guys had good luck w/ them these last couple weeks, especially for lakers.

no i use it just the way it came. it is a foam pad w/ slits about an inch long, about 12 rows w/ 6 or 7 slits in each row. you could hold about 120 suttons in it or over 200 db smelts, i got both the reg caddy and the mega caddy, i think $15.00 for the big one. they work great here is the link

Thanks LOL Dave Like I said early in a post I'm new to this site.But have been reading it all summer long All I know is this site is going to cost me $$ I have been away from Winni for about 6 years raising a family so I'm just getting back into my hobbie.And I don't have any of the spoons or fly's you guys talk about but I'm hoping over the corse of the winter I will get all the stuff I need.I have a santa list that is over a page long so later this fall I will ask what lures and colors I should get.So keep me in mind if you have any idea's for me Thanks again for the feed back.

John I thank you for all the time you spent on all that is needed for salmon fishing It has taken me years to buy the stuff that I have and I could not have said it any better than how you said it.I buy nothing but the best that I can afford.If you go to the Showboats picture page go to the bottom you will see my pride and joy(besides my family)I got her in 2003.I agree with you about having 200 spoons and only use 9 or 10 my wife always asks why I have to buy new lures If I already have every color known to man kind.My winni lures consist of mooseluck wobblers I'm not really sure what the top guns and the other lures you guys speak of are yet but I hope I will.I also need flys I don't know if you guys prefer single or tandem's and what size hooks.I'm am already infected with the disease you talk about.I have had it for over 30 years.That's what I like about this site I think we all have it.Spring time is just around the corner so I need to start thinking about getting my boxes filled with lures I here about on this site.Thanks again for the replies.Have a great day.I know I'm new but I enjoy talking about fishing and every thing about it.
