Help w/ Hummingbird 565/ transducer?

My friend Paul (who doesn't have internet access) has a problem with his Hummingbird 565. If he's troling very slowly (<.5 Knots) it works fine. But, if he increases speed above that, the unit shows fish everywhere. If he stops or slows down again, no fish.
Right now the transducer is mounted on the extreme far edge of the Stbd side of the transom with the face even with the bottom of the hull.
Anybody have any ideas on what's wrong? He even bought this new unit last year figuring the old one (which did the same thing) was faulty. Apparently, not.

Any help would be appreciated.

All the best,

Gary

PS Good luck hunting to those on this site who, like me, just can't wait for NH muzzleloader to start.

Re: Help w/ Hummingbird 565/ transducer?

I think that he should move the transducer inboard some and not be out on the far edge .the wake from the boat may be pushing on the transducer and causing it to malfunction . "reel it in "

Re: Re: Help w/ Hummingbird 565/ transducer?

Hey there... I did a little research through Humminbird and here's what I gather...

Before moving the transducer, have him check to see if it is "noise" caused by electrical interference from the motor. To do this he just needs to increase rpms while in neutral and not moving. If this has the same effect as travelling at higher speeds its electrical interference. Good luck figuring that out...LOL

If the above test has no affect, time to move the transducer. The face should be slightly ABOVE the plane of the hull. Slightly, like 1/8-1/4". Also, like was stated before, moving more toward the center will put it in "quieter" water less likely to have air pockets and such that distort the readings going to the transducer.

Hope this helps. Good luck to him.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll pass the tips on to Paul he can try it and see if it works. I told Paul that if anybody could help it would be the great guys on this site. Thanks again.

All the best,

Gary
