About Flies or is it Fly's

I know nobody uses scent, but if you did and used it on Fly's, how would yu get the sticky stuff off ????

While worjing on my fishin stuff, I finnaly got to the Fly's (Flies)several where all stuck together from the smelly stuff (I do use it and believe in it)

I rememberd seeing Jason at Paugus cleaning some once, looked like he had then in a sauce pan that might have had heated water in it ??? Not wanting to seem stupid I didn't ask any questions. But now I have to have the answer. A few flies are all tin and stuck together, probably look no different than when they are in the water being fished. Let's face it most flies are a work of art when dry just out of the package, but when they enter the water they get all slicked back and look nothing like they did prior.

Now to add a little confusion, someone on this web site once said, he uses scent but "only to make the feathers on his flies stick together". So that being said, maybe I'm wasting my time worrying about the condition of my Fly's (Flies)in the first place ???

PS: I was able to fluff them up a bit with dish soap, rinsed well, then dried with a hair dryer, look "allmost" like new, but not quite.

Re: About Flies or is it Fly's

John S., my guess is a soak in dilute white wine vinegar might do the trick without soap. Soaps leave residues, the vinegar will take them off.

Now that you've raised this, I wonder how my flies are doing...

Re: Re: About Flies or is it Fly's

I wonder how some of the artificial Flie material will hold up to vinegar ??? My soapy water solution did have a pinkish tinge to it overnight and I'll have to say it still left some stickyness on the material. I had to wish a few by hand with dish soap to get them totaly clean. Another note, hair dryer tends to shrivel up some of the materials too, maybe better to air dry.

Of course we could stop using the smelly stuff and/or throw the sticky flies out. Still the question is does the stuff on the flie do it any harm if left on ??

I guess you won't know until you try. I'd try 1 part vinegar in 4-10 parts water as a first go and see what happens.

Re: Re: Re: Re: About Flies or is it Fly's

I've used the smelly stuff on some of my fly's but most of them I just throw away because they get beat up. Maybe I don't use as much as most people do, but on the ones that don't get thrown away I just put them back in the fly box. Did you try really hot water?
Good luck let us know what works..

John, Just throw them away and get new ones.

I never really noticed it that much during the season when changing them etc. maybe it's just that I checked them now after sitting on gagarge since October.

I like your idea better, chuck em, I've got plenty more, whe I buy anything I flies, I buy 4 or 6 of the same ones anyhow.

Re: About Flies or is it Fly's

funny that i tried the same thing last week

I boiled a bunch in water on the stove for 2 minutes
it took the stickieness off but didn't get the discoloration out.

Re: Re: About Flies or is it Fly's

I'll try boiling a few next time, but I think all mine are OK now after hand scrubbing them a few times, I was nervous about boiling them.
