My Derby Weekend

First and foremost I wanted to say thanks to Craig (Slip_Knot) and his brother for getting us going on Thursday morning. Took us to a nice area of the lake ad we hit it many times over the weekend.

Weekend started for us on Wednesday as we got to our house and got settled in, we didnt do too much fishing, but did take the boat out and got it all setup.

Thursday hit the water a little harder, boated some nice lakers, my biggest of the weekend from near Governors at 23", actually my biggest ever. We caught about 5 fish on Thursday without a whole lot of hours work.

Friday started off pretty good, a few Salmon, one 20" and another 19". the rest of the fish caught were Lakers. Matter of fact those were out last salmon of the weekend, it was a Laker weekend for us.

Saturday was a SLOW day, we caught 3 Small Mouths and 1 laker, and a nice rainbow. That was our hardest day of fishing too, we were on the water by 430, and got off near 7pm. LONG day with not a lot of results.

Sunday we got up early again and started out in the rain. Hit a spot near Round Island and we were marking fish all over the place, 18 feet of water seemed to be schools of fish, it might of been the schools Big John was looking for of the 5 lber's but they just wouldnt bite. We tried every lure and speed we could throw at them. We finally managed to boat 2 more lakers but that was it.

Overall I'd say we caught 20+ fish. Talking to a lot of people it sounds like we had a pretty good weekend. We didnt have anything board worthy except that 23" laker I caught, but of course that was on Thursday so a day early.

I got to say hello to LOL Dave, Slip_Knot, Big John, Monahan, and Salty on the radio. It was nice talking to you all.

Lets see for damage on the weekend, I had a starter probem that I was able to fix on Thursday. Thought I was going to have to replace it but the guys at M&M Salvage helped me fix it. Thursday in the wind I was carrying the rods into the house to fix some leaders and the wind picked up as I was coming through the door and it slammed shut on my Eagle Claws and snapped 2 of the rods up near the tips, so I had to replace those. Lastly I had an attractor out on one of my downriggers and somehow the crimp must of been weak or something because all of a sudden my rod snapped up and the rigger did too and all i had to show for it was a large swivel connect to my Camberlain....lost that whole setup in 50+ feet of water so I know it wasnt draggig on the bottow.

Overall a very good weekend, relaxing and had a good time with my buddy Tom and his Son. Did you guys know that 20 year old dont like getting up at 4am?? Hmmm I never knew that.

Re: My Derby Weekend

48 year olds don't like getting up at 4 AM either.....

Re: My Derby Weekend

4am?? You guys were getting up late. LOL. No wonder we were already fishing when you pulled into the spot Saturday morning. LOL. Pansies. Hahaha. Just kidding.

I snapped a couple pictures of you guys as you were trolling by us... I'll send them to you when I have time to upload them to the computer.

We had a good time on our "1/2 Derby"... sounds like we didn't miss much Saturday afternoon and Sunday anyways.

Re: My Derby Weekend

I never noticed going by you 50 times during the derby, but whats with the Advertising on the side of your boat? LOL I hope you get free lures for that ;-)

Re: My Derby Weekend

Hahaha... Savant Spoon is owned by Tom Manning. He invited Adrien and I to fish with him at the Sodus Pro-Am last year. It went well... and we will be fishing all four Lake Ontario Pro-Ams with him this year. He pays the fees, so the least I can do is try to advertise for him a little.
I knew I would be leaving my boat in NY for a couple weeks last Aug/Sep at a high visibility location. Figured I'd put his website on the boat to give him free advertisement, since my boat would be right beside a tackle store.
Not sure if it helped, but it couldn't have hurt.
I'm leaving it there in hopes that people will see it and check out his site. We noticed several people looking at us with binoculars during the derby... maybe a couple of them read it.

Re: My Derby Weekend

Wow Slipnot, I missed all the heavy hitters this weekend. I never saw you, Matty, Travis, Salty, Jason or Adrien out there last weekend.
No wonder we didn't catch any monsters.... we were in the wrong places!!!!
Got to find were the big ones live!

Re: My Derby Weekend

We saw Salty, but none of the others. I think everyone was fishing different areas trying to find the "hot" spot. Other than Salty and Scott, I don't think we saw anyone we knew out there. Weird, as we usually see quite a few familiar faces on the water.

Re: My Derby Weekend

You gouys needed to be fishing the southern end of the lake I saw all those guys go by most mornings and could hear the chatter on the radio so they were close by there someplace since my radio doesn't get that good a reception with the small antenna I am running.
