I miss the Guides reports

Trying to remember that this site exists because of a conscientious Winni salmon guide I have to tell you that I always loved the Guide's reports and videos.
Winni professional guides might have been part of the overfishing problem BUT! they were the first to offer rod reductions to help reduce the hook damage and hook MORTALITY! It seems that the rest of us are happy that we can go right back to hooking large numbers of 2-3lb salmon and let F&G figure out how to cure the problem.

Even without a May Salmon Derby I head to Ame's Farm for my annual week long salmon fishing vacation. Now,I will find out if I can be happy with my own voluntary fewer rods and single hook philosophy!
OK! I've promised a half dozen salmon fillets to my family!

OH! I'm sure it will be a tough time for the Winni Guides. Adrien thinks that he might not charter this summer so Travis promised to take my kids out this July. It sure would be great if more fishermen from this site chartered Travis or one of the other Winni Guides for a great day of salmon fishing!!

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Hey Dick

You Wonder Why the Guides aren't posting any reports? I just read your May Hawkeye article where you state " This serious problems has resulted from the terrific success by professional charter boats running as many as 12 rods off flat lines ( what ever the hell that means? ) downriggers and outriggers".
Once again dumping the responsiblity for the problem in our lap So for the record

1 There are not that many Charter boats on winni certainly less than 10 and only 4 that fish their regualarly
2. We are not running 12 or 10 rods as many like too belive on my boat I fish 4 rods max occacsionaly 5 period.
3. Nobody is realy making a living at this.
For us, as Travis Williams explained in his April Hawkeye articule, it is labor of love and a partime income at best.
4. As far as your 70 fish day comment I know the guide and I know the day, it was 3 years ago and is by no means repersenitive of a typical day and in my opionion it was used in your article simply to in flame the public aginist us guides.

So I won't be posting fishing infro and reports here and I'm not the only guide that feels this way. To quote one of the Captains on the TV show (Deadlyest Catch) " Don't call us unless you are sinking"

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Dick at least there not going to beat you like myself when I made a statement very touchy situation guess when you are found guilty and backed into a corner either you come out fighting or hide your head in a hole and wait for the storm to stop . best of luck for tight lines SF
PS I would love to have a Winni Derby with no electronics or fancy fishing gear involved just a rod ,reel, and compass with map and see how everyone does!!!

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Seafox

Thanks, Boy! I wish there were more of you on the water.

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Seafox and Dick Baker, you need to let it go about the guides being the problem. Nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion. Those of us who know Glen, Adrian, Pat, Mattie, Salty, Travis, Pete, Jason or Cody, we know that they are passionate about preserving the fishery. These guys are good guys and as long as you post negative or untruthful comments about how many rods they are running, you will hear from the rest of us. Just my 2 cents.

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Correction on Misty Mornins' post. I'm not a Guide, my son AJ's the guide. But I do care about the fishery. Didn't wound a fish today fishing with single hooks, rubber landing net. (Didn't catch any either.)

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Saefox,

"guess when you are found guilty and backed into a corner either you come out fighting or hide your head in a hole and wait for the storm to stop".

Going to need you to go ahead and tell me what this is supposed to mean?

Re: I miss the Guides reports

I think it's called being an arrogant P___K placing blame on somebody he doesn't even know????? Just my .02 but I think thats what it means. Sorry if I sound like a jerk lately (those of you who know me, know that I'm not one LOL) but some lately these placing blame posts are really P__SING ME OFF Ughhhhhh And I barely get time to check the site anymore with my student teaching and stuff Ughhhhhh Sure would love reading more knowledgeable post then this bunch of B___S__IT!!!!!!!! Take Care God Bless LOL Dave

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Glen,
Yup! Your right. When I referred to dozen rods on outrigger I meant 12 rods total for a boat with both sets of boards out. During last years Derby I did saw one boat running 13 rods. Looked like they had boards out 150 ft. and double rods on two of four down riggers.

My real concern isn't the guides but the many fishermen who spent thousands of dollars to rig their boats just like the professional guides. It didn't take long before they learned to duplicate the guide techniques and catch and release big numbers.

Sorry I got you so upset.

Dick

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Dick
I have made a pretty big effort on my part to restrain from entering this fray. Sadly, here I am, and will try to make it brief. Re: your "real concern". Are you implying that anglers (regardless of their current level of expertise) should refrain from improving their boat and techniques to the best of their goals and abilities?
In parting, I think all, including myself, should reread Salty's eloquent post including (loosely quoted) "the rancor"!
For some time now, this bickering, has produced no positive results!

You guy's {you know who you are} made the Bed and now we ALL get to lay in it.
Just wanted to say thanks for NOTHING !!!!

Re: I miss the Guides reports

Wow and I thought this crap was over.Problem started with small stockers and hopefully will correct itself soon.As stated in past, this is not the first time the lake fishing has had problems nor will it be the last.I for one will continue to "take a kid fishing" and will use every legal trick and or device available to me to do so.I still intend to help the charters out with info on the lake because they have bent over backwards to help others.polebreaker(Dave Paul)

Re: I miss the Guides reports, LOL

LOL, could not agree with you more IMIN. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Dick, you have got to be kidding? You want guides to stick their heads up above the horizon so you can cut them off again?

By the way, I am sure that you are right. No one knew how to use a planner or rigger or even lead core until we saw the guides using them. I guess the prior 45 years of salmon fishing had taught me nothing. You seem completely willing to alienate everyone here, lol.

As to the blame game, it seems clear that you hold the guides responsible if not for the catching and hook wounding large numbers, then in enabling all the rest of us idiot fishermen they have taught to do the same. This is a clear assumption that this is THE problem with our fishery. You are assuming that our most knowledgeable fishermen are the least responsible. Does it even seem likely that these folks who are trying to stipend their living at our past time are going to bite the hand that feeds them?

From my perspective it is irresponsible posts like yours that has silenced them. You might try and keep in mind that this website you obviously use often is owned and maintained by a guide.

Re: I miss the Guides reports, LOL

Well put Russ, but I would also like to point out to those who don't know that Traivs has jumped in with both feet trying to fix the fishery we all hold so dear, and i'm sure on more than one occation he and some of the other guides have stuck thier necks out on issues we don't even know about!KUDOS to them and I can't blame them for going quite!!! BARRY

Re: I miss the Guides reports, LOL

Wow Can not beleive this CRAP is starting again, For one, unless you've been out with some of the guides from this site, I wouldn't knock em, and throw all the blame on them. The blame lies on each and every one of us, regardless of how careful we are we all know that every now and then no matter how hard we try there are going to be injured fish once and awhile. Let's remember what this site was and can still be, you guys keep bashing all the guides etc... this site will probably be gone, I know for one I would hate to see that happen. I've been out with almost every guide on this site except for a couple of them, and no matter how much I tried to learn from each of them, I still can't buy a goshdarn fish on winni to save my life. I can throw the same lure/fly/smelt etc... troll the same exact speed, same depths etc... etc... etc.... (have even followed one of the boats around almost on his back door for 4 hours) and still can't catch or have a day where I catch more then 3 fish. Have I learned alot from this site????? Uhhhhhhhh Yeah we all have regardless of what you say or how long you've been fishing, But I didn't learn it all from the guides, trial and error, talking to complete strangers, being invited onto other peoples boats (even though they may not have known me from a hole in the wall), And I hate to say it Mr. Baker, but during last years derby you even invited me down to your cabin at Ame's Farm to learn how to sew smelt to hopefully improve my chances using live bait. (Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it to your cabin that weekend) But If I started catching HUGE numbers of fish because of the technique you were going to show me first hand, would that make you the guilty party (sort of like you mention a guide per se in your article?) in helping me to catch more fish????????? Even though I don't agree with what I heard you wrote in Hawkeye, I wouldn't judge you for teaching me the technique? I would say THANK YOU for being a fellow sportsman and helping me to learn something new that I did not know previously. Let's remember people (sorry this is the teacher in me coming out) " No matter how old you are or how young you are, we are all "LIFELONG LEARNERS" there is always something new and exciting for us to learn, we don't stop learning till the day we die, and for all we know we continue learning after that as well. Let's all stop the bickering/name calling/blame placing and all stick together to build the fishery back up to what it once was and can still be. Take Care God Bless LOL Dave (who also misses the guide reports, but completely understands why I am not seeing the reports and can honestly say I don't blame them in the least) May you all have tight lines and Good Safe Fishing

Re: I miss the Guides reports, LOL

Thanks Dave,
Sorry I missed you last May. I think the improved shiner technique would be super at the lake in Maine.

I went over my Hawkeye story and it doesn't blame Guides. It blames all of us and points a direction for a long term cure.

I notice that Travis "Cool Water Charter" has a sticky for Discount Specials this month. I will fish the first week of May out of my own boat but I have offered to pay Travis for a couple of days to take my family fishing in July. My post asks that you consider helping out the Travis and the Winni Guides by taking advantage of there service. It seems as if I'm the only one who did so far!!

Let's get back to fishing and doing our best to make this the super fishery that it was a few years ago!!
