Herald Super 8

DIVISION 1 SUPER EIGHT

1. MALDEN CATHOLIC (13-3-3; LW 4) – This is what the Lancers do at this time of year: get on a roll and next thing you know, they’re at the top of the list.

2. BC HIGH (13-2-4; LW 2) – The loss to MC wasn’t pretty, but the Eagles bounced right back with a pair of wins to reach the Buddy Ferreira Classic final.

3. ARLINGTON (19-2-2; LW 5) – Not a whole lot of doubt the Spy Ponders should be the top public team this weekend.

4. HINGHAM (15-4-2; LW 7) – Despite the loss to BC High, the Harbormen were pretty impressive the rest of the week.

5. CATHOLIC MEMORIAL (13-3-2; LW 3) – It will be a bit of a conundrum for the various rankings and committees if the Knights win the Catholic Conference and get seeded behind MC and BC High.

6. POPE FRANCIS (14-4-1; LW 8) – Gave serious thought to keeping Walpole here (just to rile everyone up) but it was hard to ignore the Cardinals’ big win against Austin Prep.

The wild cards: 7. Austin Prep (15-2-2; LW 1); 8. Walpole (20-0-1; LW 6); 9. Central Catholic (13-4-3; LW 10); 10. Marshfield (16-2-2; LW 9).

Re: Herald Super 8

Looking at the list there only seems to be a handful of good teams. When you're talking about putting Walpole in the top 6....OMG. How far has high school hockey fallen?

It definitely seems like a down year.
There is no dominant team this year.

This is the beginning of the end ......
Mass HS Hockey is about three years away from becoming NH High School Hockey ......

Re: Herald Super 8

A few things I think are happening here -

Many true athletes are seeing how next to impossible a full ride is in hockey and many have moved on to other sports. If you can run and have marginal Lax skills the odds are you can make a 45 man D-I roster. And no two years of Juniors.

The full season teams are draining the teams from the bottom and slowly moving up to D-I.

Full season drain along with the Prep teams searching for more kids to round out their rosters is lowering the level of competition.

Re: Herald Super 8

Seems to me like the public schools have closed the gap a bit on all the catholic schools creating a lot more parity across the whole landscape. Why is that a bad thing? I watched Arlington beat marshfield 3-2 the other night in what I thought was a very well played hockey game by two very good public programs. Seems like this discussion board is full of catholic school alumni who think their high schools need to be elitist and stuck up just like themselves

Re: Herald Super 8

Yeah many catholic parents have a bit of resentment toward the good publics. Heck, many times they're paying almost state college tuition to get their kid onto a better hockey team, out of a bad school district and often at a reduced level of academics relative to many of the public schools. Seriously, I'd think some of them would be money ahead by just moving to a district that has better academics and better hockey.

I think it's the opposite , the Catholics and Preps have fallen down a notch closer to the publics . I believe that is the direction it's going with all the Junior and full season teams and it is only going to get worse .

Re: Herald Super 8

Agree. I think you're both kind of saying the same thing.
