Talking to some of the dad's who's kids play Club Hockey and they claim it's as good as most middle of the pack D-3 varsity hockey. One dad has a son that plays club at a D-I hockey school and swears it's better than most D-3.
So why would I put my kid through a year of Jr.'s at $X to pursue a D-3 spot when he can walk in and play club day one and not take a year or two to get there?
You are not alone..more and more families realizing the same thing
It's funny because now he can pick the school HE wants to go to instead of some coach in some backwater town in the middle of no where picking him. Would you rather go to school and play club at BC, BU or UNH or go to school and play D-III hockey at Fitchburg State or UMass-Dartmouth?
You still have to be a pretty darn good hockey player to play club at the big schools, i.e., probably of 3th or 4th line D1 caliber who did not get recruited or selected the name school for academics rather than focusing on chasing the dream. Oh, for those not of D1 caliber, club teams want kids who played a year or two of juniors.
I've heard stories that at Notre Dame they take one club player during the season and move him up to varsity. Do any universities ever use the club team as a limited source for players? Kind of a 'walk on' situation.
No "Dude" your an wring douche! UNH Club win the Club hockey national championships last year. There are 4 kids on that team that turn down Umile's bid to get them on the D1 Varsity team. At URI they had 60 kids show up for Tri-outs. Just because you start your insult with "Dude" doesn't mean you know jack. It probably means that's what you are doing with your left hand while typing with your right. Stupid Fs like you just **** me off. Study the current environment A-Hole
The decision is up to the student and nothing wrong with a loan free college education from local state schools. Studenst that apply themselves will do just as good as those with schools you mentioned. Club hockey is an option as well at many schools and that decison is also up to the student. School first...hockey second. Good luck!
I wonder if there's a 'user fee' associated with club hockey at most schools? do any of them have free club?
My brother the dentist went to a NESCAC school then Tufts Dental. Last year I let him and his family use my vacation home on Winnipesauke in the summer and my house in Vail spring over break. Oh and me a Fitchburg State Grad. Don't slam the state schools, many of my class mattes make me look like a slacker.
So dudes you're saying the coach at UNH tried to get four kids to move onto the D-1 squad this past year? And why wouldn't a kid do it? Or why didn't the kids do it?
It started 3 years ago, as UNH has been terrible, when starting goalie DeSmith got booted from school for assaulting his girl friend. Then the freshman back up got hurt. He tried to get the club goalie, UNH Club won the Club National championship this past year and have been in the final for 4 for the past couple of years. So why not move up? They were not being offered scholarships, just an opportunity to play. So no money and temporary playing or for the skaters 4th line. What would you rather do be first line on a Club national championship team or sit 4th line on a last place team? Remember no scholarship money to move up. Seem like a no brainier.
Typing on an iPhone *******! Your probably just jealous cause you live in a dump.
*your* probly not smaaht
This whole thread is a joke. My son plays club ice hockey at a Hockey East school and I have never seen the Varsity coach scouting the club practices or games. I agree, there are many very good hockey players at the club level but saying that they are equivalent to 4th liners at any D1 school is a stretch. My son's team has a former D1 player on the squad that played in the USHL prior to that and a few junior hockey players. Think about ASU last year, they were the best club hockey team in the land. If you look at their D1 roster this year you may find 2 or 3 kids from their club team still on it. Keep in mind they had a rough first year at the NCAA D1 level. Although I believe that there is some talent and skill at the club level I don't think that many of the kids there would make a D1 team. I personally think that my son is a fantastic hockey player and he has played with many current NCAA D1, D3, USHL and a couple of recent NHL draft picks but from my perspective there is a reason why those NCAA D1 teams weren't knocking down our door.
Yeah I'd like to see a D-I school like UMASS-Amherst with a six figure scouting budget that combs all over North America looking for kids go into the athletic department and say, "No need for all that money for all of these trips to Saskatoon & Medicine Hat, I found four players down on the Club Team." Hell they barely scout New England let alone players in their own school.
And they blow! Meanwhile, BC, BU, UNH, UMaine, UVM, UConn, etc all recruit in New England. When they go out and get a Canadian or other kid, usually worth taking.
