But if I skate my kid into the ground starting when he is 7/8 years old he will be the best 10 year old around and be like that forever! Even though if anyone even bumps him on the ice I scream from the stands!

The 07 parents are the worst. They literally skate their kids all year round.
They learned from the 05 and 06 parents. I believe the little voices in there heads were saying something like this...Cross ice? I'm not doing no cross ice! My 7 year old gets it. He needs to be playing full ice all year round cause he can put his head down and skate faster than any kid out there! He's going some where!...
By last year Peewee / Bantams you pretty much need to go all in or forget it. Before that you need to take a break.

The logic is pretty simple... The people who are making money off of your obsession to skate your kid year round will ALWAYS give you avenues to do so, and promote the NEED to do so... The people who have actually made it, (and don't make money off of you) say do not go year round... Hmmm, I wonder who is right?

My son is playing lax and baseball and enjoying both quite a bit. That's how I know it's a good decision. He's having fun. My kid is a pretty good hockey player but being that he's ten I have no idea what sport if any he will be playing in five years. It's not the worst idea in the world to introduce a couple of different things into the mix.
In my town almost all the H.S. varsity hockey players play baseball or lacrosse. I guess they must be the "benders" who didn't get the special summer invite.
Newsflash ! almost all of the summer tourney teams are email bender teams, I know you feel special when you get that email to play for a select summer tourney team that says your child was chosen or ranked high on there selection list, but you and several hundred other people got that same email, and the ones selected are the first to write that check.
Nobody has seen your kid play or feels that he is a top prospect for summer hockey. They have your email, make you feel special and you believe it. As evident by the past few tournaments littered with kids cut from AAA and Tier 1 programs and kids from Town 3/4 and B2 teams.
Sorry, but overcharging and promoting bad ideas (year round hockey) to gullible kids and parents so you can make this month's mortgage payment is what is pathetic. Passing that off as a legit "business" is also pathetic. Just because you are "selling" something, doesn't make it a business. Same category as drug dealers and used car salesmen.

I think your all nuts. It's your money spend it on what you want. If Johnny wants to skate and you can afford it great. If he doesn't, then don't push it. Baseball and Lax are great for kids too. My son is 06, he plays hockey year round because he wants to. If he is not on the ice, he is on his roller blades, or in the basement shooting, and when that is done, he settles in for some NHL 16 on Xbox1. I am no expert on parenting, but I take my cues from him. If he is doing his homework, his chores, and wants to skate then go for it, why wouldn't I reward him and who are you or anyone else to tell me that its wrong.
As far as the tournaments go, in my opinion, they provide a great opportunity for the kids. When my son left town hockey after 1st year mite, he played in the Shamrock Invite. That first time he was slow and his reaction time was off, because if you want to admit or not, each level provides a faster paced game. The summer tournaments allowed him to adapt to the change in speed, and come time for the season, he was playing at a pace higher then the level we had chosen out of town hockey.
If your delusional, and think Johnny is playing so that he can make the NHL or get a D1 scholarship and your the driving force in pushing him towards summer hockey, then I would agree that it is wrong, but if your kid is asking to skate, and you want to put him in a better position to succeed, then its your money, and in my mind there is no better way to spend it then on making your kid happy.
From what I have seen very few 10-year-olds want to play year-round hockey and nothing else.
It's just my opinion but it's almost a disservice letting a young kid specialize in one sport. Even if they ask to.

I couldn't agree more here. "To each, his own." My son also plays hockey basically year round, but also plays baseball, also plays lacrosse, also swims, etc. I get that as he gets older it will be difficult to juggle everything, but at this time, it's about exposing him to everything and having him choose what he wants to play. At this point, he just loves hockey, and when given the choice between the sports, he chooses hockey. It kills me to see how much parents can hate on other parents because they have a different view on how they choose to raise their kids. My son plays on multiple spring hockey teams. He does that because he wants to. He does that because I am fortunate enough to afford it (although I do wish he loved a less expensive sport as much). He does that because my wife and I love to see our children be passionate about something, and want them to be as successful as they can. He also plays baseball. He also plays lacrosse. We have had conflicts in the schedule when we have multiple things going, and we figure it out. I applaud other parents who want their kids to succeed, and put them in a position to be successful. I have seen the other side of this though too, where it's more the parent pushing a particular sport on their kid when the passion isn't there. But if your child loves to do something, then I don't understand the hate they get when they nurture that passion?
Oh well...I get it though, the DBoard wouldn't be the same if we didn't have all the hate. The DBoard wouldn't be the same if parents didn't care more about hockey than their kids do. And the DBoard wouldn't be the same if kid's never got cut from hockey teams. Just my two cents as I sit at my desk at work and count down the minutes until I get to leave the office
To each his own indeed but my 06 would skate everyday if I let him but I feel having him play all year round is not good cuz it will burn him out which he insists will never happen. I do think a local tournament here and there isn't a bad thing though. He hadn't skated for the past 2 months and I let him do a tournament this past weekend and he looked really good. The time off and rest were good for him and he commented how much he missed hockey. It just reaffirmed to me that he doesn't need to be doing skills the very next day after the season ends. I actually know parents who did that. The thought out there is that if little Johnny isn't putting in the work over the summer that the other kids will pass him by. It just isn't true

No hate, your just wrong. I bet your kid likes ice cream, to stay up late, maybe not do homework, play Xbox, all the normal things that make kids happy, but I bet you have restrictions on All of that? Why, it's not good for them you say? Kids need to recover from hockey, and if you take them away from it they will want it more when they get to play. Be a parent, do some research, make the right decision..... Mic drop!
