Re: Who Are The Best 08 Teams At Developing Kids?

NO one develops kids at the Mite level it seems. It's all a joke full of daddy coaches only looking at their own kids and making deals with other dads who think they are there for their kid but they just live sad boring lives and Mite hockey is their hobby. Lets look at the 08s in in 10 years.

Name a sport that doesnt use "Daddy" Coaches? Who in the hell do you think is going to coach a bunch of 7-14 years olds and not have a kid on a team? Its Parents like you who think for some reason its ok to criticize people who take time out of their days to coach your Bratty bender and then complain that your inattentive snot bag cant skate properly or should be on the power play when he still isnt sure which hand he should shoot with. Have some balls and step up and volunteer and prove you can do it better or shut up. unfortunately the more likely scenario is you will keep criticizing behind peoples back like the loser you seem to be.
Take a pill, dude. It's 8AM going into a holiday weekend! Not the original responder, but there absolutely should be an expectation of parents that someone that knows what they are doing will be working with the kids in exchange for $3,000 a season. And before you accuse me of being sackless, too, I did coach my kid from age 4 until 12. But I was a puck shagger, I knew enough to know what I didn't know. Then I stepped aside.

I can tell you with absolute confidence that Daddy Coaches fall into four categories: 1) those that know what they are doing (and usually bring skills guys in - because they DO know that they are doing), 2) those that mean well, but don't realize that the game is different today than when they played - even guys that reached the pro level can fall into this category, 3) folks that think because they were handed a whistle and a track suit they are Heinrich Himmler, and 4) folks that are just in it for the whistle and track suit, and lean on their sticks the entire practice.

So, we learned in most programs you have to go outside of the team to develop your kid. It isn't going to happen at team practices. Find good folks that you are comfortable working with and sign up for small group or individual skills, starting as early as you can with edgework.

And IMO there should be NO Daddy Coaches at the U14 level unless they are also active skills coaches.

who cares what time it is. when an idiot says something stupid im going to call them on it. it just irks me because as you said you knew enough to step aside when time, others wont even jump on the ice and B***h and moan about every detail. Thats my point. Step up or shut up. Parents like that are killing the experience for these kids. I see it every year. And its obvious that yes i am a "daddy" coach and have experience coaching at all levels midgets and down. I volunteer my time to help these kids and dont need to be attacked by morons who dont know jack about Coaching or about hockey , besides what the learn watching the Bruins of course.

I get you, Tony. I understand firsthand how hard it is to deal with too high a percentage of parents. My kid has also been on teams with Daddy Coaches so bad - and way too high a percentage of them - that it's a wonder they didn't kill my kid's spirit for the game. Somehow, I've helped to keep him on track so that he is still 100% committed to the game, and has worked hard enough to get himself into a position to be a legit D1 prospect.

So, the animosity on both sides is understandable.

I remember when my kid was a Mite. I had helped another Daddy Coach to get a spot on the bench, opening the door for the offense. In the middle of the game - on the bench, in front of the kids - he started screaming at me that I was favoring my kid, that he was out on the ice half the time. Ummmm, he plays defense, and we only had four D. Do the math, Einstein.

I will tell you, I can't wait until he signs or potentially even drafted. I will be sending out some e-mails to some specific coaches to make sure they see the news. Not that any of them are involved in coaching any more, their kids have all quit the game. All. That tells you something.

I love how Daddy Coaches get there panties in a bunch when parents start calling them out. They always riffle back with "step up and volunteer". YOU GET PAID *******. When little Johnny's tuition fee is waved because your "volunteering" your getting compensated for your time. Maybe not at the town level but definitely at club.

yes because your a loser and cant do it and have to beg and plead to pay $3500 to get your bender on the EMHL team. Trust me i can take criticism from anyone who might have the slightest clue. I get my "panties in a bunch" because your a loser and your calling us out for what? Trying to teach your brat how to play hockey when really they have no real athleticism and cant listen when drills are explained 6 times to them. I see it every day as the kids are extensions of the parents and it shows on you buddy. The only people that complain are the ones who think their johnny is a super special superstar and is going to be lacing them up with Crosby soon. In reality the parents that actually understand how things work never have to complain because it works for their kid and its shocking , i know, that those kids actually have talent. Even though So understand that when you start moaning about the coaching its because your kid cant hack it and your ego gets bruised not because of some mystical daddy" coaches spell that has been cast on the team.

Re: Who Are The Best 08 Teams At Developing Kids?

You're the LOSER that has to coach just so little johnny gets on a team. I don't pay $3500, my kid plays for free...... Maybe you should get your head out of your ass.

Re: Who Are The Best 08 Teams At Developing Kids?

i am wondering why all this talk of 'daddy' coaches on THIS board. it makes sense on the town teams --- you are placed on a team then find out the coach. with little choice to suffer or pay much more for club. but for club teams --- don't you know going in who is the coach?

which begs the question: are you so are desperate to get on 'any' club team you take an offer without researching the coach or just too stupid or lazy to do it (the research)?

Re: Who Are The Best 08 Teams At Developing Kids?

i'm not stupid just confused

Fair point, but definitely not a town issue. 1. You don't really have a choice, the number of club teams that don't have dads coaching up until at least bantams are very, very minimal, and 2. It may not be the head coach, but a coach that gets added that you have no way of knowing about.

How #2 works is, a dad comes in, says I have 5 elite players I will bring with me, but you have to take my kid, and you have to put me on the bench. Pathetic, really. But, it happens.

So if the head coach sees the aggregate talent as improving the team, he agrees. Bam! Your kid's season is shot to hell, and AC's kid has license to take a big, steaming dump in the middle of the locker room if he feels like it.

Re: Who Are The Best 08 Teams At Developing Kids?

we frown on dumps in the locker room. just sayin....

Great point that bears repeating. Too many people look past a suspect coaching situation to play on a more "prestigious" team. The trophies mean nothing in the long run, what sticks with you is the hockey IQ, skill development, and sportsmanship imparted by a talented coach.

Re: Who Are The Best 08 Teams At Developing Kids?

The waived fee is an alternative to hiring a coach from outside the organization. At the youth hockey level its almost impossible.

Most coaches spend a significant amount of time on the ice and off the ice..usually amounting to over 100 hours per season. Next time just say thank you to the coach, no matter if he is a Daddy coach or not. If you have a problem with the Daddy coach then change teams.

$35 an hour to skate around and act like I know what I'm talking about? Where do i sign up? I played collage D3 hockey on the third line for one season 20 years ago. I haven't skated since so just ignore the fact that my knees aren't bent when I'm showing kids how to do a "C"cut and I only can backwards crossover to the left. My skate sharpening radius is 9/16" so the kids will think I'm a master skater with the noise my blades make though. I will also waste more time trying to figure out what drill I want to do next then it actually takes to run it. But trust me you're kids will be in good hands and you all should be kissing my ass. Oh and to little johnny's dad I like my coffee black.

Re: Who Are The Best 08 Teams At Developing Kids?

All of the coaches I know (I admit I don't know all of them) in my organization are very qualified coaches. Again if you don't like your coach then find another team....better yet if you played hockey at the D3 college level then should quit ******** and do it yourself.
