monetizes southern teams' desire to come up to North and attend tournaments. I really wish the north-south games are worthwhile.

These are for profit leagues so why wouldn't they charge a fee? There is money to be made in youth hockey and if you are going to sit back and complain then move to town hockey and spend your season guessing at the schedule. I am ok with paying a few bucks for an organized schedule. When my kid hits the beer league maybe he will bump into the other 99% of these kids as they are all heading to the same place eventually.

You're missing the point. Folks are already paying USA Hockey and MA Hockey (which is completely useless) and now USPHL which also benefits my benders in no way whatsoever. Almost 5000+ members at $100 a pop.....do the math. We're being taken hostage. Ya...ya.....go play somewhere else if you don't like it. Easier said than done.
