Actually - Yes, those are your options. Sit silently and enjoy the game or become a ref.
This is misleading regarding faceoff locations because the majority of parents don’t know the rules anyway
What is misleading about faceoff locations? Its either wrong or right.
You should be able to get the shelves stocked by yourself if needed!
At this point yes, shut up or become a ref
Typical comment from a never-played, never even been on the ice daddy who leans over the rails or on the glass. Go try it for one 10 minute session in your kid's next practice and see how well you manage. Chump.
Be grateful you have any refs at all. Lots of cancelled games out there where parents would have been happy to just get any dummy at all with a zebra shirt on the ice so their kids can play.
Rates will go up but the owners aren't going to absorb the cost. What's amusing about this whole thing is that the more Daddy complains and screams at the rink, more refs will leave and ref fees WILL go up and the Dad complaining is the one who's going to pay for it when next years tuition bill becomes due. Keep on screaming off sides from the stands and watch your fees go up.
I got yelled at by a customer because I made two mistakes on her $335. Those two mistakes were just a result of me transponding numbers. My boss then found out about my errors and talked with me about how to not make mistakes again. I get paid to work, so I need to be able to get critisized when Im working for money. Refs are in the same situation. They make mistakes and that is ok. I just dont think the refs have a boss helping them be better at their job.
I'm a ref and do keep up with ongoing training sessions but I've yet to find a seminar or program that teaches you how to ref solo. Please pass along any continuing training sessions that address this and I'll be happy to take a look. I've been taught how to ref in a two, three and four man system. I worked four solo games this past weekend and didn't ask to be solo on any of them. Back to the OP, we can use your help, lace em up and lend a hand.
I can’t ref games. I have 3 kids in sports all fall and winter. I agree that at the very least two refs are needed on full ice. I’m willing to pay more in tuition to get the refs the help they need. Is money the issue? Btw I have never yelled at a ref or even thought about. I shut up, sit by myself during games. It’s just hard to watch an official do a bad job, get confrontational with a coach and literally laugh about it after a game.
I actually want to start officiating but cant until he go to a seminar. However, there are no more seminars to attend within a 100 miles of my house. Mass Hockey put a nice spin on the issue, but the bottom line is Mass Hockey is doing nothing to recruit officials.
Just visit the official seminar registration page and take a look at the opportunities for new officials in all other areas of the country. MN - 32 upcoming seminars. NY - 18 MD - 5 even Maine has 8. Massachusetts scheduled seminars for new officials ZERO! Pretty obvious what the issue is.
2 officials are needed at full ice games. Too much is missed with one official. Parents should never bark at officials but coaches have a little more at steak. The situation is unfortunate for all so if money is the issue than leagues and orgs need to increase the pay to attract more refs.
Dont they understand my child plays in the elite level hockey and needs elite referring to ensure he gets a D1 Scholarship.
what is the pay for a mite or squirt game?
What is the big deal with Mite & Squirt games and the need for 'certification' for basically a play-date for little kids learning to skate? For Town games throw the junior hockey player out there, pay him $70-$80 a game and have him drop the puck. Move the certified coaches to older kids games or higher end tournaments and let's move on. Seems USA Hockey has out thought themselves again.
it starts at the top with zero programs turning away a check whether they need to add 30 more games to a schedule or not, and goes right through awful parents.
Could officials start their own union?
