What’s does anybody think think about a ref that doesn’t call one penalty on the home team, other 5 called ref even though 4 of the penalties happened right in front of said ref, and only starts calling when home team is up by 3 goals in the 3rd. And when the game is over 4 of the home team players skate up to him and give him fist bumps. Side note, home team is far and away the most penalized team in the league. Would love to see the breakdown on home penalties opposed to away and when that ref is reffing at home.

It's bad, and there's not a thing you can do about it. You just have to accept that sometimes there are sh*tty things in youth hockey, and that this is one of them.

So true after seeing what parents said today about the refs and what the coaches said to the refs. My son is 14 and reffed today and I don’t think he will be running back to Ref any time soon. I will say I was proud of him for telling a coach “I don’t need your help”. I was also very impressed with the asst coach who told my son after the game that he handled the coach perfectly.

Don't know where you are from or what league your son worked but I suggest before packing it in, if he's in an area that's part of the Valley League, he starts there and keep it to Mites and Squirts. Most of the coaches are a little more relaxed and their assignors try hard to put new ref's with experienced refs to start their career. It doesn't pay as much as other leagues but still good money for a kid in high school and it provides good foundational training for officials just starting out. I hate to see new officials walking away in their first year, we need them.

I totally agree with this. I don’t think refs give a fck what team is playing. They can’t possibly see everything all the time. How many refs are on nhl games?

Sir, you need to relax. First, when a parent complains about officiating the first thing I wonder is "do you even know the rules?" Second, every official calls a game slightly differently, for example I don't call hooking unless it's egregious but I'll quickly blow my whistle if you catch a kid in the numbers in any fashion. Third, many coaches and parents teach their kids to fist bump a ref after a game to say "thank you", win or lose, and it's always appreciated. My youngest is now in high school and he still does this after a game. Lastly, in many years of working games, I've never met a ref who cared about who won or lost a game.
