Wasn't knocking any coach or org, just giving the parent(s) signs to look for as they have to be realistic for where their kid should be and their development. Also as a coach I would take more pride in developing a "bottom" player and watching that instead of bringing in a "better" player that someone else developed for another win or two during a season

Oh sure, a coach loves to develop players. But some kids just don't catch on and then it gets really frustrating. Not all kids are meant to be great hockey players. Parents look to blame the coach when often times the kid is just maybe in the wrong sport or isn't going to ever be a top player. Not sure what age group we're talking about either but some kids have more drive than others as well.

Handled differently by all coaches. Rule of thumb in competitive club hockey is that the bottom 4 should be replaced/upgraded. Coaches should give these type of players heads up early in the process so they can start looking for new team. Issue is that it’s not always cut and dry until mid March. Either way if you are bottom 1/3 of team type of player you could get cut. If you are bottom 1/3 with a bad work ethic and shoot pucks in between whistles you are 100% getting cut.

My son was a lower level elite player for 3 years. Mite through Squirt Minor. Bottom 5 kid. Worked hard. listened well. Every year I knew there was a chance he'd get cut. My coach was clear at the end of every season that he would need to improve to make the team but he "loved his work ethic and attitude" - Fast forward to the end of his squirt minor year. Coach told us in early February to start looking for another team at a lower level, within the org or elsewhere. He didn't cut our kid yet. Just before tryout week he told us our kid wasn't going to make it. We went outside the org to a lower level teams tryout in March and made it. Been with them ever since and kid is near top of team. I think coach who cut us was right in the way he handled us.

Parents with respect for the coach who also know they are leaving should tell coach now. Same for the coaches who 100% know a kid will not get a spot next season. Unfortunately things aren’t always decided right now which leaves both coaches and parents in tough spots.

Parents with respect for the coach who also know they are leaving should tell coach now. Same for the coaches who 100% know a kid will not get a spot next season. Unfortunately things aren’t always decided right now which leaves both coaches and parents in tough spots.
They shouldn't tell the coach because the negative attitude toward the child will be real.

Again, depends on the coach. Between my four boys, I've had this conversation a few times and some were totally cool with it while others reacted by punishing my kid. Examples both good and bad are plentiful in these scenarios. I usually went down the honest route but also regretted it on a few occasions.

Just remember, if a team is competitive, it is usually difficult for a player to make it by just showing up at tryouts. This can be one reason you hear of kids skating at another team's practice in Feb/March. The hockey world is small so keep in mind that when your kid skates at another program, his current head coach will know before he's done changing in the locker room.

I always heard not to tell until you walk out of there for the last time. I made the mistake of telling my son’s coach early to give him a chance to replace my son. Well the coach who was a very nice guy, started acting like an ass to my son including checking him at least a couple of times at practice prior to the kids being checking age. Also the coach is well over 6’ and well over 200lbs. I would advise not saying a word

Probably depends on the kid that leaves. If it's someone not good no one cares.

Your example is very very rare.
Not really. Pretty typical at the squirt elite level. Coaches know 100% of their roster before tryouts by that age. Easier to give a heads up to the ones he is letting go in that case.

The problem is usually the delusional parents thinking their kid should be on the team when the shouldn't be.

I've also seen situations where the parent had an issue with the coach and had to leave for that reason OR kid was cut over issue with parents. Brutal.

If you havent had a conversation yet I would be concerned. The reality is most parents if they are honest with themselves know whos got a spot and whos on the bubble and whos out. My sons coach started telling us in mid December that they want him next season. The longer you wait and dont know the better chance you have of getting shut out the doors close quick. And dont believe waiting for tryouts the teams are all filled long before that day comes

My kid is one of the few first year players on a peewee team. He doesn’t get a lot of playing time this year, but he plays well when he does. Coaches haven’t said anything. I assume he has a spot next year as he’d be one of a few returners. Is this presumptuous given no one has reached out?

Kid is playing on a 2010/2011 team which is mostly 2010s, but my kid is one of a few 2011s on the team. Should I be worried that coach hasn’t said anything about next year yet?

No, not at all as the only 2 year pewee teams are town or PHL

Not where we live - it is the best team in our state; they combine age groups but typically only take a couple first years; however, only one of the first years (coach’s kid) got good playing time this year. I have no idea where we stand with this club.

Then you’re in good shape if they took you as a first year. Give it a couple weeks
