Used to live at Jim Campbells logging camps at 12-Mile Arm and Little Naukati.

12-Mile Arm: 1972-1974. Little Naukati: 1975-1979.

My dad, Tom Rentz, was the super for Jim Campbell when he established his logging camp at Little Naukati. I recall the crew working off the KP-10 (old WWII landing craft with lots of rats) to set up the camp; bulldozing in the roads: building the first dock; sifting dirt in order to put in a "forest-service mandated" lawn; blazing a trail to Pebble Beach (Hey! I was only 12 and it was a great adventure!); watching old movies from a rickety projector in the pool hall/theater; helping put up the first school house (Yes, it was 1 room and red and for the first few weeks we had to use the bathroom next door because the plumbing had not been put in yet!); and too much else to even write about! It was a young boys dream!

I would love to take my wife up for a visit as I know she will fall in love with the area and want to live there fore the rest of our lives. The only problem is she doesn't like the rain. Does any one know what hour of what day it is NOT supposed to rain this year so I can plan the trip?

Actually I live on Wadleigh Island, which is 5 minutes away

I moved here last July so I've been here for 15 months. I'm still in awe of this place - the beauty, the people, the whole experience.

I don't have much history here yet - but I plan to live here the rest of my days, so gimme some time!

I will never leave this area - Southeast Alaska is my home now. I love the pace, the lifestyle, being able to feed myself with the abundant nature around me, and being surrounded by nice people who all care about each other and know what it's like to be a community. Everyone here has a responsibility to everyone else to help them make it through tough winters and lean times so that we may all enjoy the abundance that is spring and summer again. What a pleasant way to live, don't you think?

I am dreaming of the day when my husband, kids and I can move there.

I placed eleventh in the Thorne Bay spelling bee when I was 11 or 12. I am now 29.

I miss you Dad. And I miss Prince of Whales Island. I miss the wind and the rain in October. I miss that silence in the winter that cannot be described, only experienced. I miss the adventure that every day brings when you live there. I miss the activity that living there forces upon you. I am so sick of t.v. and phone calls, and being busy! I am so homesick for Southeast Alaska that I daydream about it on a daily basis. And after reading through the guest book, it sounds like anyone who's ever left feels the same way I do.
